When I first started designing I really knew nothing about color harmony beyond what I naturally felt like “looked good”. I often went for colors that felt different or unique. As I designed more, and consumed more information, the single most important focal point that I came to appreciate and recognize is contrast. When you’re combining colors, it is truly essential to ensure that contrast between the two colors is significant. When there isn’t a great deal of contrast, especially when typography is involved, the function of the design is greatly limited due to poor legibility.
Simple “hack”: Choose your primary color. This can be literally any color. Then, move to the opposite end of the “brightness” spectrum for that color. (For example, if you start with light blue like this week’s color then a dark blue will be a safe bet as a great pair. Make small tweaks to your style and judgement, and always test.
